Hot drinks: Warming up your congregation this winter

Everyone loves a cuppa – Here’s how you can keep hot drinks flying out the door this winter.

Did you know that in the UK we drink approximately 95 million cups of coffee per day, while over 75% of Brits drink at least one cup of tea per day?

Clearly, we love a hot drink, and as the winter chill descends churches need to make sure they can deliver them quickly and effectively to congregations gasping for a cuppa after a service. To do this, they need to ask themselves the following questions.

Do you have the storage required?

Depending on the size of your congregation, you might need lots more cups – but do you have enough storage space for cups and ingredients? Volunteers need somewhere they can access cups quickly, without them being too exposed to the elements so they end up getting dusty or covered in bacteria. A durable, water-resistant, powder-coated steel cabinet is a great solution.

Do you have the right appliances to provide hot drinks?

Perhaps you are only serving tea/coffee to a few people at once, in which case a kettle or a tea urn might suffice. But if you are looking to serve lots of people at once, you might consider getting an instant water boiler that can serve more than 60 cups of fresh boiling water in an instant (just look at the impact that this has had at St Joseph’s Havant). You also may need to consider a commercial dishwasher that can rapidly wash plates and cups so that you can keep the tea and biscuits coming!

Do you have a dedicated space for serving tea?

You might be working in a smaller space that’s becomes easily congested with people coming in and out, and this might end up causing a safety hazard – particularly with boiling water and hot drinks being carried around. A serving hatch is a fantastic way to connect your kitchen with dining areas so that volunteers can serve people quickly.

Steelplan Kitchens can consult with you to help you with your specific problem – whether it’s lacking the appliances or space required to serve your congregation, we’ll find a solution.

We love a cuppa – and we’ve advised many churches on how we can supply a warm and inviting semi-commercial kitchen that’s also durable, making it the perfect place for rapidly churning out hot drinks.
