Kitchen checklist: what needs fixing to make the kitchen safe, useful, and enjoyable?

Do you ever think that your community group’s kitchen looks or feels like it’s not quite fit for purpose? Sometimes certain issues are more obvious than others, and different problems can be more subtle. This checklist will help you identify and start to address the weaknesses that make the kitchen less pleasant or easy to use.

Peeling

Easy to see, but also easy to overlook, peeling wrap on surfaces and doors not only detracts from the overall visual appeal, but also undermines the hygiene of the kitchen. When the material underneath (like MDF), is exposed, it readily absorbs moisture and harbours germs.

Sealant is also prone to peeling, and since it typically sits in areas of high moisture (sinks, splashbacks and wall abutments), it is especially prone to gathering water and other liquids that bacteria can lurk in.

The best way to avoid peeling is to choose materials that aren’t vulnerable to it. For example, mild steel can be polyester powder-coated instead of wrapped, meaning there is nothing to peel. The added bonus is that you don’t sacrifice aesthetics, because you can still choose from a wide range of colours.

Lack of equipment

If you or others don’t feel inspired to use the kitchen for more or better things, there might be some shortcomings in the kitchen equipment. If you simply don’t have the tools to do what you would like to do, then the kitchen will not feel like a space that anyone is excited to use.

It might just be a case of buying some more, but there may be more fundamental fixes to accommodate things like a new range, oven, or cooking equipment. If space is an issue, there are often smart design solutions that can make more efficient use of the kitchen footprint. Steelplan’s experts can advise on how to maximise your space, and are always willing to have a no-obligation conversation about your ambitions for the kitchen.

Lack of storage

If the kitchen aways feels messy, despite what seems like constant tidying, poor storage could be a culprit. When things have no obvious place for safe and tidy storage, they will inevitably end up wherever someone finds a spot for them, which will typically be a work surface.

While not a silver bullet for tidiness, storage is fundamental to an ordered kitchen. If you’re not sure how much or what type of storage you need, Steelplan are always happy to advise as part of a design consultation.

Drabness

Finally, it might be that the kitchen just does not look like a fun or welcoming area. Colour has a remarkable impact on our perception and even mood, and a dull kitchen might be more off-putting than you realise.

On the other hand, a kitchen that matches the character of your community group will be an attractive and fun space, which can be a focal point and hub for activities.

Whether you opt for a mild steel kitchen or a high quality Woodplan design, there will be colours to suit the mood that you want to create. See the full list here.
