Kitchen materials: Why you should choose mild steel for your church or community centre

What is mild steel, and why is it the best choice for your community’s kitchen?

Domestic-style kitchens are not designed to handle heavy use. Materials like vinyl-wrapped MDF peel and deteriorate very quickly. Sealant gaps harbour moisture, mould, and bacteria, and make it nearly impossible to keep the kitchen clean. Before long, the kitchen will need replacing.

On the other end of the spectrum, fully stainless-steel commercial style kitchens are intimidating, impersonal, excessive, and expensive for a community group’s needs.

That is why powder-coated coloured mild steel units are the perfect choice. It is durable and hygienic, and still allows you to make your kitchen a welcoming and personal environment.

What is Zintec Polyester Powder Coated Mild Steel?

A thin layer of zinc on mild steel seals the metal against oxidisation and means the manufacturer can apply polyester powder finishes, making the surface resistant to corrosion. It will also withstand dents and chips, which means it is perfect for communal kitchen spaces in settings like church halls and community centres.

The powder coating is also the perfect base to apply colours and finishes, so you can pick a colour scheme for a characterful and welcoming kitchen. For example, a Steelplan kitchen lets you choose from 18 finishes.

At Steelplan Kitchens, we always recommend polyester powder coated mild steel for churches and community centres. For a no-obligation discussion of your kitchen needs, call 020 8254 0090 or email [email protected].

Should a church or community centre kitchen be made entirely of mild steel?

We recommend that your community centre kitchen has a mild steel carcass, with a stainless steel worktop. That way, the areas where your kitchen encounters the heaviest and the most demanding use have maximum durability.

A stainless steel worktop also allows you to choose a recessed and seamless-welded sink, which is grained and polished into the worktop, as well as a folded rear upstand to all wall abutments. That keeps the area wipe-clean, with no sealant to deteriorate or gaps for moisture to gather.

How should we choose a mild steel kitchen?

Your choice of kitchen depends on what you will use it for, who else might use it, and what kind of appearance you want it to have. To help you envision the kitchen you need, and how it would look in your space, Steelplan can offer a free 3D design and consultation service to present a mock-up of your kitchen using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
